In our opinion and experience, landscape fabric has proven to be a burden and not a benefit in the garden! We highly recommend not using it in your landscape or garden beds.
If you are dealing with a weed problem, lay cardboard and/or newspaper over the problem area and cover with a thick layer of mulch. Weeds or other undesirables cannot grow through it. Over time, everything will smother out and the paper will decompose, which is great for your soil. Give it a try, you will not be sorry! Oh, one more thing, reusing old cardboard and newspaper is much cheaper than fabric – in fact, it’s a great way to recycle and it’s free!

I have used newspapers for years. I also like to use newspaper in my veggie garden to keep the walking paths clear of weeds. I have found that landscape fabric often will cause plants to rot off at the soil line during a rainy period. I’ve also found that some of the less expensive fabrics will not let water pass through so the soil doesn’t always get the rain water if not a heave rain.
